What's a DivX File?

DivX, also also called DivX-MPEG4 or "DVD killer", is new digital compression technology that based on MPEG-4 Part 2 and born for DVD ripping. The video files using DivX compression technology are small but the image quality is good. A common CD can hold 120 minutes of high quality movies close to DVD. DivX was originally a hack version of Microsoft MPEG-4 technology. V1 and V2 are used in AVI files The encoding quality of V1 and V2 is not very good. Things changed in Microsoft MPEG4 V3. The picture quality has made remarkable improvements. Later, some hackers and their group not only cracked Microsoft's MPEG4, removed the limitation for AVI container format, and created a new video encoding technology - DivX3.11, which could be seen everywhere in the era of Divx.

DivX was later widely used for compressing videos and thus became the informal "standard" of DVDRip. Due to the technology of DivX and DVD decryption, the DVD movie can be spread through the Internet, and the quality of DivX video is very close to that of DVD. Most people can not see the difference, but the capacity is only 1/3 or even 1/4 of the DVD.
