M2TS is the filename extension for BDAV M2TS (Blu-ray Disc Audio-Video MPEG-2 Transport Stream) file container format based on MPEG-2 TS container. The BDAV container format includes specification for random-access media, such as Blu-ray Disc, DVD, hard drives or solid-state memory cards. It's also known as M2TS container. M2TS is widely used used for HD video on Blu-ray Disc and AVCHD (Advanced Video Coding High Definition).
The video on Blu-ray Discs could be encoded using one of H.265, H.264/MPEG-4 AVC, H.262/MPEG-2 Part 2, and SMPTE VC-1, while audio Dolby Digital, DTS, uncompressed LPCM, etc. The M2TS container format used on AVCHD devices is more restricted and only supports H.264/MPEG-4 AVC video compression and AC3/LPCM audio compression. So AVCHD is actually a simpler version of the Blu-ray Disc. However, compared to Blu-ray Disc, AVCHD can use more storage media, including DVD media, flash memory cards and hard disk drives. Sony, Panasonic and Canon are famous companies that provides various types of AVCHD camcorders like DVD camcorders, HDD camcorders and flash memory camcorders. If you have been recording video with an AVCHD camcorder, you would not be stranger to .mts and .m2ts video files. Generally, most HD camcorders record video to MTS format, which is just as what you see on your computer and SD card. But if you import videos from camcorder to your computer using the supplied software like Sony's PMB, you'll get M2TS video files. Note that AVCHD supports up to 1080p HD videos.
Nowadays, most media player and video editor applications natively support MTS/M2TS videos. Some may allow you to edit the original video, while others requires transcoding before importing. Here are the recommended applications to play and and edit MTS/M2TS files: Filme Video Editor, iMovie, VLC, KMPlayer, PotPlayer, CyberLink PowerDirector, Wondershare Filmora, Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premiere, Sony Vegas Pro, etc.
Don't try to copy and play M2TS files from commercially produced Blu-ray Disc because they are copy-protected using AACS(Advanced Access Content System. The aforementioned software that supports M2TS files usually works only with decrypted or unencrypted M2TS files.

Question: Difference between M2TS and MTS?
Answer: M2TS is for storing videos on computer and Blu-ray Disc, while MTS is for recording video on camcorder.
Question: How do you edit M2TS files?
Answer: Most video editing software is compatible with M2TS/MTS video files. However, since they are usually high definition files, there are high demands on your computer hardware. The editing software may freeze or crash. If possible, disable the decoding feature of your graphic card while editing or playing so as to make the process fast. Alternatively, try to convert M2TS to MP4 or other formats to decrease the file size before editing.
Question: Can I edit MTS video with iMovie or FCP?
Answer: The latest version of iMovie and Final Cut Pro natively supports AVCHD through Import From Camera. Apple Final Cut Express 4, Final Cut Pro 6, and iMovie '09 do not support editing of AVCHD MTS directly. Imported AVCHD MTS files are automatically converted into the Apple Intermediate Codec format, which requires huge hard disk space (about 40GB per hour). If you have limit disk space, use a video converter to convert MTS to a HD format for continue editing. See how to import MTS to iMovie >>
