What's an M2TS File?

M2TS is the filename extension for BDAV M2TS (Blu-ray Disc Audio-Video MPEG-2 Transport Stream) file container format based on MPEG-2 TS container. The BDAV container format includes specification for random-access media, such as Blu-ray Disc, DVD, hard drives or solid-state memory cards. It's also known as M2TS container. M2TS is widely used used for HD video on Blu-ray Disc and AVCHD (Advanced Video Coding High Definition).

The video on Blu-ray Discs could be encoded using one of H.265, H.264/MPEG-4 AVC, H.262/MPEG-2 Part 2, and SMPTE VC-1, while audio Dolby Digital, DTS, uncompressed LPCM, etc. The M2TS container format used on AVCHD devices is more restricted and only supports H.264/MPEG-4 AVC video compression and AC3/LPCM audio compression. So AVCHD is actually a simpler version of the Blu-ray Disc. However, compared to Blu-ray Disc, AVCHD can use more storage media, including DVD media, flash memory cards and hard disk drives. Sony, Panasonic and Canon are famous companies that provides various types of AVCHD camcorders like DVD camcorders, HDD camcorders and flash memory camcorders. If you have been recording video with an AVCHD camcorder, you would not be stranger to .mts and .m2ts video files. Generally, most HD camcorders record video to MTS format, which is just as what you see on your computer and SD card.
