What's a AAC File?

AAC, short for Advanced Audio Coding, a lossy audio compression format defined by the MPEG-4 standard, developed by Fraunhofer, but Dolby, Sony and AT&T are also major contributors. AAC is the natural successor of MP3 (MPEG-1/2 Layer 3) , in the new multimedia MPEG-4 standard that is widely used for various media. AAC can include as many as 48 full-bandwidth (up to 96khz) audio channels in one track, plus 15 low-frequency effect channels, up to 15 data streams and more. In fact, AAC's algorithm was completed in 1997, when it was called MPEG-2 AAC. However, as the MPEG-4 audio standard was formed in 2000, MPEG-2 AAC was also used as the core of its encoding technology. At the same time some new encoding features are add, so that it is also called MPEG-4 AAC.

AAC has a higher quality than MP3. The algorithm used by AAC is different from the MP3 algorithm. AAC combines other functions to improve coding efficiency. AAC's audio algorithms greatly exceed the previous compression algorithms (such as MP3). The high frequency part of AAC may not be better than the MP3 of the same frequency in the spectrum, or even worse than the latter. But you can easily find that AAC's signal is significantly denser and thicker than MP3.
